Okay, for the sake of argument let's go with your hypothesis.

Why are US 9 year olds doing meth and glue when Cdn 9 year olds aren't?

Wild guess-because Canada does not have a large # of poor AND absentee parents like we do in America?

A speculative guess, I have no basis to say if that is true or not.

I've been providing questions, not answers as well.

Poor - I might be with you on that. Our safety nets are pretty wide.

Absentee - What do you mean? Working long hours or gone?

Americans have this work disease. They think they get a lot done if they stay long hours; when the reality is they spend more time correcting any progress they thought they had made.

has nothing to do with long hours at work. You don't see Japanese going on gang rampages do you?

It's a violent culture. You have to begin to wonder why people left their countries in Europe to immigrate to the U.S. throughout its history. Many probably were violent reject who couldn't make it in their homelands and fled to the U.S. to escape legal trouble. I'm clutching at straws I know. But I'm trying to come up with something to explain the violent culture we have.

When gangs are considered cool, you know there is a problem. The gangster lifestyle is just cool, even I think so. but I have enough restraint and knowledge (and I'm too much a *****) to not pursue that lifestyle.

By absentee I mean parents who play no part in their childs life.

I was not reffering to work-a-holics.

I am refering to the stereotypical crappy parents in the U.S. .

I've heard a couple reports in the last few weeks about a debate in Maine about providing birth control pills to 11 year old girls in some particular school district. I can't help but think that if you have 11 year olds in need of the pill there has to be some serious parenting issues at work.

I just read that entire 9 page story about the guy.... my heart breaks reading it.

Sorry, no dice. Kids like this (with essentially no positive socializing influence to counteract the drug and gang involvement) become incorrigible sociopaths by the time they are 8, or maybe 9.

Truth is, many have attachment disorder (can't recall the proper terminology) from neglect in infancy. Their brains simply never developed the pathways to connect emotionally with anyone or anything. Those pathways only form in the infant brain. At 18 months or so it would take a figurative miracle. At 3 years, a genuine God miracle.

It breaks my heart that this happens, all the time, in many places around the world. Read up on the "child soldiers" of Africa. It breaks my heart that people like the cabbie wind up victims in cases like this. But I don't shed a tear for the killer.

For the criminal? That sure sounds like it was the case.

It was asked by a poster why America breeds more sociopaths then Canada despite the many similarities our countries had. I took a guess admitting I had no real evidence it was the case.

Then why such a contrast between Canada and US? Similar cultures in many respects. You have a decades long war on drugs yet drugs are leading preteens into violent crime in your country... I don't understand the difference quite frankly.
Our drug war is insane, and the way it is waged is stupid. Back in the early to mid 80s Reagan, Congress, and many of the states increased penalties for adults busted dealing drugs. So minors were recruited into the drug trade to avoid the harsher penalties (doh!) and juvenile crime rates, especially violent crime, started increasing as teens became participants in the black market. Here in Kansas we avoided the worst of that problem because state pols didn't follow in the Feds' footsteps.
