Classism would of been better. The poor can't afford good legal council.
Poor guy. Too bad every murderer can't afford Johnny Cochrane. Things would be much more fair then, right?

Also, if there really was a defect in the sentencing phase, and 40 years was the fair, correct sentence, then what's the problem? So a hardened criminal ****ed up his appeal - I don't much care, and neither does anyone else. Except you. I mean who knows, right? Maybe if we let him out, he'll be reformed and a model citizen.

Personally, I say let him rot until he dies.

prison is immoral in a way. The only reason to have it is for the safety of society. There's a list of reasons above, but safety of society is the only valid reason to have prisons.

I'd rather tag them (so you can tell if they re-enter the country), send them to some island and let them fend for themselves and make their own society amongst criminal types. Though I think it would be a lot like Escape from LA. But my point it's wrong to lock someone up because they wish to live differently. If they want to be violent sociopaths they should do so away from the rest of us who don't want that.

I'm ok with dumping violent offenders somewhere other than prison, but rather than an island, I'd suggest the middle of the Gobi or Sahara, or maybe somewhere in the Amazon.

When did murder become a minor offense?

Then why such a contrast between Canada and US? Similar cultures in many respects. You have a decades long war on drugs yet drugs are leading preteens into violent crime in your country... I don't understand the difference quite frankly.

What is the drug use rate comparatively between the US and Canada?

                    Particularly things like glue/etc.

A man was sentenced when he was 12 for murder..... and after serving for 16 years, they EXTEND his sentence!

Oh, if it was unclear to anyone else, this took place in the state that time forgot, TEXAS and of course if not apparent, the youth was black.

People wondered why I want to throw Texas out of the union?

20 years for murder. He'll get out in 4 more.

What would that answer tell us? If higher in Canada then drugs aren't the answer/cause of the US youth crime? If lower in Canada would it imply your War on Drugs is a collosal failure producing the opposite result?

Additional possbile hypothesis I could see creating is that we are targeting the wrong drugs, or that (Certain) drugs are responsible for the increased problems the US is currently facing (we are, aren't we?).

Wrong drugs? Seems to me your government hates all drugs except alcohol, tobacco and prescriptions. What drugs aren't they targetting?

I find the drug answer to be unsatisfactory in and of itself. I suspect there is something deeper in the culture.

He is not going to get parole for the forseeble future even after the 4 years. He had already been rejected once or twice when he decided to roll the dice on the new sentencing hearing. he may have figured he was going to have to do the entire 27 years under the original sentence. He had no time off for good behavior, because he was a piece of **** in prison, having had around 200 displinary incidents already. He has a platoon of not-well wishers show up for every such hearing.

I don't see much doing things about Glue, for example.

And I think we were pretty light on Meth until recently.
