Finally, it was a bit embarrassing watching the Lib Dems appear to make him vibrant. Did you see the last party political broadcast with him playing football with some young kids? When he kicked the ball to score the goal (what a winner!!), it was an extremely crap shot, and god knows how many takes they had to try before they got that...

The policies might not change a huge amount with the new leader but it's bound to help the party a lot.
Basically you are saying he was too old.

There was a time where age was associated with wisdom, rather than the inability to play football.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was saying. As certain leaders around the world will evidence, it's not a wise leader that is required to win an election, just one who seems (for want of a better word) "cool" to the voters.

If so that shows how debased politics has become, where image trumps substance.

                      Ming didn't have any substance.

He failed to sell himself and didn't have any ideas that would really make a significant impact or win votes.

The Liberals need to be a party looking to increase civil liberties in our country, reduce the size of the state in our lives let people whack their kids again.

I agree with this. The country needs a liberty party. Badly.

I don't think a Libertarian Party would work all that well in Europe.

At first I thought this thread was about our esteemed Co -Owner / Administrator.

Anyhow, Ming's departure is a comment on the trivialisation of politics as an issue in the tabloids.

On the one hand we have focus of the young turks in labour getting the spin wrong on Gordon and now a focus on an 'old ' turk.

My feeling is the country want rid of this Labour spinocracy but are not convinced or believe the Conservatives have the leader or policies to replace them. And the debate amongst 'floating voters' is about which party (Tory or Lib Dems) is best placed to deliver that change. And perhaps hoping for a hung parliament.

The legacy of the Thatcher/ Major era still rankles deep with a lot of people but Blair /Brown era is catching up.

What a disaster was John Smith's death.
