No, it couldn't. See the very series you refer to in order to see what happens when you throw out established canon to both ratings and fan respect.

My understanding is that this will be set at the time of TOS since they're hiring new actors to play the old TOS gang. It can't be a prequel since any real trekkie knows that Kirk was the second commander of the Enterprise . Since the first commander was Pike they can't get the whole gang back together on the Enterprise and pretend that the movie portrays events occuring before the TOS pilot. That is they can't unless they're willing to completely ignore the previously established Star Trek timeline like they did on the last TV series ("shudder').
You're a stupid head! Kirk was the third commander, Pike was the second and Robert April was the first.
rebooting the entire franchise such as batman, superman, and I suppose nbsg (never seen it) is the best way to go. But the problem lies in that star trek fans tend to be a bit, shall we say- crazy and fanatical. I can't imagine the protests.
I want to see a DS9 movie, theirs a LOT of lose end that need to be tied-up, DS9 was one of the most under-rated Trek series, well written with vivid and evolving characters its really far more deserving of a movie then some schlock ToS ret-con no-original-actors crap .

The show runs four times as long as the original series did...?
Seriously, if this isn't a reboot of the Star Trek franchise, I'm staying home. Star Trek hasn't put a watchable movie out since Final Contact, and hasn't put a truly interesting movie out since the Wrath of Khan - Search for Spock story arc.

Pike is in the movie as well, so that works out. On the other hand, so is Chekov, who wasn't on the show at the beginning, so they'll be fudging a bit. It's apparently a save-the-timeline plot again...yay.

You know the whirring noises made by computers of that era, the 1960s, came from the card reader interface, though computers of an earlier era also had huge banks of mechanical-electrical switches. If the computers were sophisticated enough to have an auditory interface there really wasn't a reason to have them make that noise, but I guess the producers felt that the audience expected the noisy computer.
Oh and don't forget, none of the feamle characters can rank higher than ensign.

So I'm hearing William Shatner is a little upset at not being in the new film. Apprantly Lenard Nimoy is in. But they have all new actors cast for Kirk, Spock, Bones etc.

He should get a life.

He was, though he was just outside of the camera view. Thats how he and Khan could recognize each other in ST2.
