For the US, I have two obvious suggestions, which I am surprised nobody have suggested already:
1) Use preferential voting (or similar) for electing the president. That way you can vote for your real favorite, without wasting and in effect handing your vote to the main candidate on the other end of the spectrum.
2) Use some form of proportional representation for elections to the house and senate. That will pave the way for more parties, breaking the current power duopoly.
Both these suggestions would also have the benefit of not having to hear US Apolytoners complain about how they don't have any good choises to vote for.
