Tens of thousands to demonstrate against street violence

Major demonstrations are set to by held in Sweden's three largest cities on Friday in response to a brutal assault in Stockholm last weekend that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy.

The fatal attack in Stockholm's Kungsholmen district has provoked a powerful reaction among the general public.

Tens of thousands of young people have responded to calls to protest against urban violence and many are expected to turn out at Friday's demonstrations in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.

One of the people behind the Stockholm demonstration is 15-year-old Anton Abele, who attended the party last weekend that ended in tragedy.

By Thursday morning, more than 65,000 people had joined the group he created on community website Facebook in response to the attack. The group is called "Protect us from street violence" ("Bevara oss från gatuvåldet").

"We can't wait for street violence to claims its next victim. We have to act now," said Anton Abele

"The police can't solve everything. We young people, and the people around us, need to ask ourselves how this can happen," he added.

Anton Abele is supported in his initiative by his father.

"The appeal and the demonstration have both met with enormous interest. Our private computers have crashed under all the pressure," said Gunnar Abele.

He also noted that music channel MTV had agreed to interrupt its programming on Friday to observe the minute's silence due to be held in honour of all victims of street violence.

Two local politicians have already agreed to speak at the demonstration in Kungsträdgården in Stockholm.

"We have also received indications that there will be government ministers among the demonstrators, who will be there in their capacity as parents," said Gunnar Abele.

I think this is awesome! And it shows that communitys like Facebook actually can affect every day life and society. It's not just a bunch of spotty kids with no friends and masters degree in nerdiness...

What exactly will they affect? What will be different Saturday morning?

Not a lot, but these things take time. Rome wasn't built in a day... But the important thing here is that e-activism is generating IRL activism.

Bah. No better than "Take back the night" marches. Feel good exercises with no real impact on public policy.

But if they can keep the momentum going this can actually do something; create awareness among the kids. Marches in themself doesn't change anything if they're not followed up by old fashioned grassroot activism...

65,000 people writing letters to members of parliament, newspapers, etc would have much more of an affect than this.

What can the politicians do? This is a youth problem and it can only be solved by the youths themselves.

So the marchers are going to change youth culture? More futile than I thought then. I thought they were after some sort of legislative change.

That just guarantees the two or three coherent letters in the bunch won't get read.

Just another bunch of hippies trying to change the world with "good feelings".

Say I'm a government official running for election and you have a demonstration outside my office. I will see it and probably do something to gain your support so you'll vote for me.

Say I'm a teenage thug beating up people and stealing their wallets. I see your lame demonstration. What exactly is my motivation to change my ways?

What exactly are you calling for? Vigilantism? Neighborhood watch? How are the youths going to stop crime?

The problem here isn't normal street violence. But a disturbing shift in the minds of youth today. A bit like Fight Club and hooliganism combined. Fighting for the fun of it. Someone needs to say 'No more!' And peer pressure is a strong motivator. otherwise we wouldn't have this situation of kids beating other kids to death. I think they'd listen more to kids their own age instead of well meaning social workers and police. If it's not cool to beat other kids senseless or even kill them, then what's the point of doing it?
