  • Yesterday I turned off my comp, all well. Today the mouse...

...can't left click. It could right click for a little while but now that's gone. I can move around the page fine, but that's about it. Can't close anything, can't start anything. We're working on borrowing a mouse to see if it's a mechanical issue. If it's a software issue then I have the disks to reformat the system, but I have a game of Civ4 going that I would hate to lose.

    Any advise?

Sounds like the mouse has gone bad.

I used an optical mouse for like 4 years that would sometimes lose the ability to left click - this problem started in it's first year of life. Whenever it cropped up (a couple times a year), I'd fix it by bashing the mouse very hard, like a karate chop on the mouse button. Your mileage probably should vary - beating electronic devices shouldn't make them resume working.

That this is a post by an AI programmer is somehow appropriate.

I'll save the karate for last resort.

I have a working mouse I could e-mail to you. Set your replicator to 'recieve'.

If it's a mechanical (ball) mouse (or an easily taken apart non-ball mouse) you might want to try opening it up and cleaning off the contacts and such... it's probably a mechanical problem, and is likely repairable (at least in the short term) by physically opening it up

Here in the Phils I lack a philips head screw driver.

But I'll start working on that too.

How are you managing to post on Poly without left clicking your mouse??

Tab and enter? Or right click and open?

Using a fancy pair of my wife's scissors I managed to open the mouse. When the dust clears I'll work on it, but the clickers appear tp be closed micro switches, no contacts.

Zkrib, we brought my wife's laptop.

The borrowed mouse worked, so its a hardware problem.

Zkrib, Clemente is in Cebu and coming home today. He can pick one up on the way home.

What do you guys think of the new ones with the wireless connection and no ball? Any good?
