The British were forced to accept some kind of independent state in the old Ottoman territory, or else fight seriously and put a lot of Jews back into concentration camps, which would not play well back home.

Actually there are a lot of parallels to India...a religiously divided territory that only made sense as an imperial administrative unit...a war-exhausted England that sure didn't want the liberal line it had just been saying it was fighting for in Europe to be shown up......and a large Muslim population behaving as quietly and peacefully as the 'House of Peace' always did.

Note: Don't take this as support of the existing situation. I believe that the creation of Israel as a 'Jewish State' on the land of non-Jews with a significant non-Jew population was a mistake and maybe a crime.

In a perfect world there would be a secular Republic of Israel and Palestine where Jews and Arabs would live together as citizens of the same country. In fact, didn't Theodore Herzl want something like that originally, back in the 19th century?
The current problem is the anachronism of an ethnic state in the 21st century.

The Zionist Jews have externalized their anger and attempted to undo their own victimization by repeating the Nazi's crimes - the victim this time being the Palestinians.
