Yeah? And my comment is aimed at people who drive in the right lane and force trucks to pass them -- which is very dangerous for everyone.

Well too bad. There's a reason they build passing lanes, ya know. So that people who wish to drive at a reasonable speed can do so without having impatient drivers tailgating for miles.
On a 16-lane road, which lanes are the passing lanes?
Trucks, by the way, are not allowed in the far left lane (the "passing lane"). They need to pass somewhere inbetween, which means merging in and out of probably faster traffic flow to pass someone obstructing flow in the right lane. This is dangerous. I see it all the time.

round here people don't realize they are "passing" lanes... I think they call them "ride in this lane because I'm an idiot" lanes
I think behavior wrt to passing lanes is pretty state-dependent. In Pennsylvania I never had a problem moving quickly in the left lane. Either the lane was empty, or slower cars would move over when I approached. My own Maryland drivers, however, were not so considerate.

They pass people. The people going 100 km/h in the far right lane are perhaps the most dangerous, because they cause massive trucks to change lanes and pass.
Or they just run into them and become my clients.

Going the posted speed limit is never wrong. Just because everyone else speeds does not meen you are required to also. That said, even I generally will speed a bit if the traffic is doing so, because as you say it is safer. Certainly wouldn't object to realistic speed limits - if people would still drive the same speed.
The issue always is, is there an 'upper limit' that most people drive (say 130km/h) and won't go over it regardless of the actual limit, or will they always feel comfortable going 20 km/h over the speed limit? I presume the state has some rationale for the limits it posts. If that rationale is income based, then would you rather pay that as straight up taxes or tolls?
Fining the guys who went the posted speed limit was inane, though. Just asking for bad publicity

The main problem is this: the towns that ticket the most tend to be the nothing little towns between big cities. The revenue from the tickets go to the region. By ticketing people passing through the region, they raise revenues without taxing their own people.
Also, in the 1970s, the speed limit was 115 km/h, not 100 km/h. During the oil crisis, it was reduced for fuel economy reasons.
The highways are designed for much higher speeds than 100 km/h. 100 km/h feels downright slow on the roads. In the 70s, they were 115 km/h and the cars then were far less safe than they are now...

Yes, that is a problem. The catch for the municipalities is that the province pays for the JP's. You can write all the tickets you want but the % that get challenged need to be heard.
The unspoken City of Toronto approach is to write as many tickets as possible and then just let go the ones that are disputed.

1. 30+MPH Over, Passing, Left Turn lane.
2. 20+, Passing, Left Turn lane
3. Slightly over Cruising
4. Cruising speed limit
5. Lane for people who want to go fast but will make a right turn in the very near future
6. Right Turn lane, Slow lane
7. Right Turn/Passing
8. Right Turn
That is about how 8 lanes are in Houston. It makes sense. Not saying that Houston traffic is that good, just in areas where there isn't construction, you can usually go about 90-100 MPH and still not get pulled over. All eight lanes come to a crawl if there is a wreck on the other side of the median.

We avoid turn ramps on the left side. That is a recipe for accidents.

They are rare. That isn't how it always is. There are also sometimes 5 or 6 turn lanes on the right too.

In Oregon I've actually seen signs on the freeways that say "Slower Traffic Keep Right" and have heard that you can get a ticket for riding in the left lane. Especially when you aren't passing anyone.
wouldn't it be better to drive the speed limit? *says the person who got a ticket for going 106 in a 70). My speeding days are over. I was stressed out at my last job and driving too fast.
