I have a couple suggestions:
1. Show him this thread. If you are too embarassed to talk to him, he can read and see your appreciation here.
2. Do you plan on having children? If you do, do the same for them that your father did for you. I know I can never repay my father for all he's done, but I can be the best father I can for his grandchildren. Pass it along.
3. If you really are so busy and not just making excuses to visit him, try writing letters. It may seem silly when you are so close to him, but the mere measure of miles does not seem to be very telling of how far apart you really are.
