Asher, I think you have made quite a breakthrough here ... you believe everything is 1/0 right/wrong, and therefore there is only your opinion and nobody else can be right except where they agree with you

Guess that makes me a lousy computer programmer though (that I think other people occasionally can be right)

The real world is not binary.

Within our heads we build a map of the world outside which may or may not correspond to the real one that is out there. The map is not the territory, though, so I believe that instead of assigning binary 0s and 1s to things, a probability (which may approach 0 or 1) is a more honest assessment. Our maps are based on the incoming data, which may or may not be reliable for a myriad of reasons, and therefore we cannot reasonably assume that our maps are entirely accurate. In some cases we can have near-certainty, in others not.

Will the sun 'rise' tomorrow? - As close to 1 as makes no odds. Perhaps there is a remote chance of the world being destroyed to make way for a hyper-space bypass, but this is unlikely.

Will there be World Peace starting this year for all eternity? As close to 0 as makes no odds.

Are first releases of software generally stable and properly functional? - Probably not.

Will my team win tonight? I haven't got a phucking clue.

Could people please stop ascribing this.. binariness to all of computer science?

I much rather define my natural numbers in unary .

No, philosophy is for understanding the world. Computer Science is for understanding computers.

Though, the logical mindset required for programming (and developed through programming) can be applied to philosophical analysis to enhance it.

There's no reason for the two schools to be at odds, IMHO.

Bah! How are we supposed to debate things on Apolyton without the illusion that we're all bitter rivals?

By being civil, open and objective?

No, that's far to much too ask of Apolyton.

                    No way.

I mean, most of the (Indian) philosophy I've come across has been pretty rigorous - those guys were merciless when attacking each other, and a single, tiny, insignificant logical error would allow everyone else to massively pwn you in debate.

There we go! Ding ding ding.

Filosofers live in the realm of semantics.

You're assuming you don't live inside a computer simulation.

Computer science is, ironically, not about understanding computers. Common misconception by someone with a filosofical mind.

A real response is unnecessary here but...

Whether or not we live in a computer simulation is meaningless because computers are complex machines that can produce results beyond binary.

Edit: Also, what would you say computer science is about, Asher? Information? Logic?

I thought the subject of this thread would be:

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

                                Computer Science is applied mathematics.
