      no, nothing like that.

i'm just asking for the opinion on the three possibilities
      1) newsweek found this true story on it's own and is publishing it with no connection to the white house
      2) white house passed this fake story to newsweek, but newsweek is not aware it and is just publishing it to sell paper
      3) white house passed this fake story to newsweek, and newsweek happily publishes it in order to help out on the war on terror (and to sell paper)

You're joking, right? I'm not saying I disagree with your principle - but that just doesn't happen. I know my federal Government certainly has spent the last 11 years and 6 months pandering to the great unwashed, trampling over our international obligations (f.e. refugees) for the sake of votes from the base morons colloqually known as 'swinging voters', all the while ignoring minor long-term things like resource depletion, basic services and infrastructure outside marginal electorates, climate change, or a clear nation-building vision for the future during the last 10 years of economic boom... in the meantime ignoring their 'conservative' heritage by building the biggest taxing, biggest spending governments with the largest number of public servants ever seen... The problem with politicians is they are, with rare exception, in it for themselves - especially those who make it to PM. I guess the old adage about the corruption of power can never be denied ;-)

First of all this isn't verified:

When Newsweek attempted to reach Wurmser for comment, his wife, Meyrav, declined to put him on the phone and said the allegations were untrue, the report said.
Second, I think it is SOP to consider every possible scenario. There are plans in the Pentagon for scenarios that have an almost nil chance of ever happening. Just because you think of a possibility doesn't mean you'll go through with it. Nothing more to say until more fact is actually brought into this discussion.

Okay. I didn't think you would take the other position.

I go with 2) NW (and other media) publish planted stories, true or not, more often than we would like to think.

However, in the US that is not the case because politicians do need to cater to their constituents' every whims so that they can raise money to stay in office. So Bush and Cheney had to lie a smidgen to gain authority that ideally they should have in the first place.
Did accountability ever meant anything to you? To whom should they be accountable to but the people who elected them? In any case it is almost gone out of US political system, but I can see with you that there are Americans would would not mind to go away with that hinderance alltogehter so that the great leaders you elect can do the great work undisturbed.
