  • I also told you to take it as a compliment, because (IMO, and that's the key) she was optimistic.
How is that a compliment? Maybe you should ask yourself why she feels the need to be optomistic.

Your father deferred to your mother. In your own words you are saying that your father was superior.
That is assuming the mother never deffered to the father on anything.

She want's men to change as much as possible. If she says men can't change, then she loses the argument.

No. Deferring is expected of the submissive partner. That's quite different. The dominant partner is allowed to choose.

Ahhh isn't that nice of her. What she says doesn't apply to me, I don't need to change, here assumption that I need to is insulting, and thus here optimism is condescending.

Exactly, so if the mother is deferring to the father, which mine did all the time, then she is doing so from a position of power. If your mother had no power in your household Kid, you didn't grow up in a normal household.

What part of what I said didn't you get?

The mother doesn't let the father make the decisions. He just makes them. When he doesn't choose to make them he let's the mother make them.

In a way yes she is defering the decisions to him, because she can confront him. But in a dominant/submissive relationship there is no confrontation.

This is how I see most people behaving. I've been watching for sometime now, and paying attention.

Whether you are insulted or not doesn't determine if it was condescending or not. The intent of the speaker determines if it was condescending. Thinking that someone can change is in no way condescending.

Well I already knew ahead of time that you didn't know how humans relate to each other.

Maybe that was the case with your parents. Not mine.

No, not martian, but the fact that you are a white male probably has a lot to do with your failure to understand the subtlties of the way relationships work in a hierarchial society.

                        • My boss is my direct superior in a corporate chain of command. By the way, my boss is female. Somehow I manage to deal with that.

I reject the analogy as absurd on its face. My parents are a married couple, not boss/underling.

You're projecting what you believe to be the norm onto my explanation of my upbringing.

Hmm. Let's see if I can be just as condescending... maybe the fact that you're a black male explains why you assume that men are all sexist and raised that way.

                          How's that sound?

How much can you know about relationships based on what you said? You basically said that your family wasn't hierarchial because your father deferred decisions to your mother. The fact that your father deferred decisions doesn't mean that your family wasn't hierarchial. You know that now right?

True that I'm projecting. I'll give you that. I'm looking at what you are saying, and I'm seeing that 1) you really don't understand the subtleties of power relationships, and 2) your family was probably pretty much like most peoples.

First, I'm not black. So I'm not being condescending. Second, you want to use "black female" probably. Also, I didn't say you assumed things. I said you didn't understand subtleties. So what you should have said is "since you are a black female you understand the subtleties of power relationships. That's not condescending and probably true.
