NK likely has a deal with Syria that they keep the whole thing quiet. If the truth comes out then it forces the international community to do something about NK which they cannot do because of China. Rock/hard place. So, they all try to sweep it under the rug.

I've been to Yongsan twice and Itaewon didn't really feel like a place buzzing with foreigners despite the half empty American base. About the only place you could reliably run into foreigners was hooker hill after night fall.

Well, that's not true. Some of the second story bars which played way to loud music way to early in the morning would get a few GIs. I also ran into one getting a fitting for my hand made suit and custom made shoes. I tell you a man hasn't had true luxury until he buy bespoke.

Shades of the early cold war, which often wasn't that cold, except in public perception.

I think the cold refered mainly to the temperature difference between TNT and ThermoNuclear Warheads. In other words compared to the total capacity for devistation each side was capable of virtualy nothing was actualy being used.
