Health insurance is a misnomer for most of these plans. Public Healthcare is a more appropriate word. However, it sounds suspiciously like Socialism so the Powers that Might Be use fancy, capitalist-sounding terms like "insurance" for it.

Ultimately with these plans, the middle class will be funding the poor's healthcare. That's all it comes down to... and the sad thing is that a proper socialist system wouldn't bother with this 'insurance' crap, they'd just tax people more and pay for it properly - allowing them to allocate the burden based on income and not split evenly throughout.

Just call it socialism and get it over with... instead of trying to fool Americans with this faux-capitalist bull. Call it socialized medicine, and then ask the American People if we like the idea. Either we will, or we won't, but enough with this B.S. already...

The ad thing is 100% true. Old woman in Cobourg (50 miles?) outside of Toronto. I live in London (350,000) and a new family Dr. recently set up practice in town. Literally thousands of people "applied" to be patients. It is sad.

Where do your parents live btw?

They actually seem to get pretty good health care but they have had the same GP for a long time.

The severity of the problem varies from province to province. Healthcare is a provincial responsibility but the Feds control the purse strings. The Feds threaten to cut off the $$ to any province that doesn't follow the Canada Heath Act (the legislation strangling private enterprise - also btw, the reason for the end of extra-billing in Ontario).

The last time I had a family doctor was during the extra-billing days. Sadly, he was an older physician and he worked until the day he died. I've been unable to replace him since. Walkin clinics is all I get.

                Google "medical tourism."

People come to the US for top-notch care when it's a matter of life and death, because we've got the state-of-the-art. But for routine medical procedures, you can actually spend $1000 on a plane ticket to Asia, $1000 on a luxury hotel room for a week or so, and a couple of thousand on, say, a knee replacement, and still come out way, way ahead of where you'd be in the US.

I've spent the last three years living in medical tourism destination countries and dealing with the Americans who come here. Believe me, this is a real and growing phenomenon.

I am sure it is possible, but hardly the norm as implied.

Our system is not perfect, but it ensures that on the whole people get good quality treatment based on need rather than money.

That may be a bit commie for some, but here in the socialist paradise that is the UK we are prepared to stick with it
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

                    • I dont see what is weird about that Patroklos, I know many Germans who drive to Poland because doctors and dentists are cheaper there.

Its not wierd for you because you have a dozen odd countries boarding you and your own country is only a few hundred miles across.

Here, unless you are going to Canada for procedures (not likely) or Mexico ( ) it a rather large expense to travel.
