Lithuanian GDP Expands at Fastest Pace in Four Years (Update1)
By Milda Seputyte
Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Lithuania's economy expanded a preliminary 10.8 percent in the third quarter, the fastest pace in four years, increasing concern the Baltic nation's economy may be running out of control.
Gross domestic product growth, the second fastest in the 27- nation European Union, compares with a rate of 8 percent in the second quarter, the Vilnius-based statistics office said in an e- mailed statement today. Only Latvia's growth is faster, at 11 percent in the second quarter.
Lithuania was warned by credit rating companies and economists that the economy is growing too fast, spurring inflation and widening the current-account deficit. Faster expansion in the entire post-Soviet Baltic region increases the risk of an abrupt slowdown -- called a hard landing -- in the coming years, economists said.
``There is no place for optimism, only concern,'' Violeta Klyviene, a Vilnius-based economist with Orion Securities, said. ``The ongoing trends threaten to further spur inflation and to widen the current-account deficit.''
The central bank said yesterday that growth is likely to slow to ``levels of potential growth'' in the second half next year. Still, a sudden economic slowdown may occur should there be a deterioration of investor sentiment, real estate prices or macroeconomic stability in the neighboring Baltic states of Latvia and Estonia, it said.
The expansion through the first nine months was 9.1 percent, led by construction, retail sales and real-estate transactions, the office said.

Mortgage approvals at two-year low
By Delphine Strauss

UK mortgage approvals fell in September to the lowest level in two years as the housing market cooled, but household borrowing rose more than expected, official data showed on Monday. The figures confirm indications that activity in the housing market has slowed sharply in response to higher borrowing costs and uncertainty over the effects of the credit squeeze.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat.
