Aww. You're trying to catagorise me. That's cute.

Also : Do camp media stars that make a living out of the camp style help to break down barriers, or do they reinforce stereotypes?

Bit of column A, bit of column B. The thing is, visibility is the greatest weapon we have against homophobia. The worst prejudice isn't seen in places where gay men and women are visible members of the community, no matter how camp they are. Its seen in places where there isn't open expression of sexuality because that's the type of environment where homophobia can thrive.

If it was all just camp media stars, then we would be stuck with stereotypes. However, the camp media stars paved the way for more visibility in general. Slightly shock tactics, yes, but by and by they've worked.

Are camp TV personalities like black-and-white minstrels?

Genuinely camp men? No. There are men are out there who are camp. Far campier than anything seen on TV. There are women who are incredibly butch. There's every point in the spectrum between. It's part of the richness of humanity.

Its straight men who act absurdly camp for the point of being offensive, they annoy me.

Are there enough gay characters on TV where their sexuality is not worn on their sleeve?

Sadly not. I get annoyed when there's a gay character simply for the point of having a gay character on the show. Especially since a lot of gay characters aren't so much gay as camp and asexual. A useful comedic foil that doesn't require character development. However, things are getting better (slowly). There are more characters on TV who just happen to be gay.

Are there gay men who are not keen on the camp style?

Oh yeah. Tons. Just like there are camp straight men. I have my camp moments. I have my butch moments. I'm quite happy drinking pints at the pub as I am watching musicals.

Sorry for 'categorising' you, Starchild, but with your avatar and the "raving alcoholic drama queen" description, I think I can be forgiven for tentatively suggesting that you give the impression of a certain element of campitudinality, amongst the many facets of your doubtless complex personality. Honey.

I appreciate your answers. Many thanks.

I'd go more for reinforcing stereotypes if most of what the media shows is stereotypical.

Oh and just so I clarify. .. . Would I be right on thibnking that say of the show 'Will and Grace" , the 'Jack " character would be totally camp while Will wasn't (or at least much less so )

My impression is that like most racial minorities, they are heavily underrepresented in mainstream tv and when they do appear , their distinguishing "minority" characteristic is a plot/ humor point. If they just need a character/ family they typically go with white dtraight people. That seems to be changing though as it seems that more and more shows are incorporating gay characters

My question though is how do you know the sexuality of a character if the don't wear it on their sleeve. In a show like say "Friends", all six of the major characters wore their heterosexuality on THEIR sleeves-- heck it was the basis of most of the comedy-- THat show was a good example of the use of a gay character though-- the ex-wife-- She could have been made straight but they got a lot more jokes out of the 'he married a lesbian' type thing

I would assume that that would be obvious. To assume a singular style preference among a group that is diverse as gay men would seem ridiculous

A Finn, a Swede and a Norwegian found themselves deserted on a small island. A Cannibal tribe lived on the island, and they emprisoned the three men. The cannibals gave each of them a final wish. First they asked the Norwegian. The Norwegian wanted to see his wife once more. The cannibals went to find the wife. After he saw his wife, the Norwegian was eaten, and the cannibals made a canoe out of his skin. The Finn wanted to smoke one more cigarette. He got his cigarette. After he was finished, he was eaten and his skin was used to make a canoe. Then came the Swede's turn - he wanted a fork. He started to punch holes into himself, and yelled: "YOU WON'T MAKE A CANOE OUT OF ME!"

Interpol was looking for an escaped convict in Denmark, and sent pictures of the man to the Danish police. The pictures were taken from both sides and the front. After a few days the Danes replied: "We caught the guys on the left and the right but the one in the middle got away".

Since I don't remember what posts I'd read at the time, I can't speak of past threads, but in this particular time, the reason for the sick face was the mention of "bug chasers". For the record however, I do find the idea of gay sex rather disgusting, but if there was a thread about straight anal sex, I'd post a sick face there too.
