  • lower voting age for school board elections

We were talking about whether HS age kids should get to vote in school board elections. My first thought was that non-parents would complain that parents plus their kids would add to much weight to higher school taxes, but then I remembered the school board here doesnt set school taxes, financing is done by the county council, the school board makes decisions within the budget total the county gives them. So I agreed with POTMs suggestion that HS kids should get to vote for school board. We all assume that the "idiot" kids probably wouldnt vote anyway.

Thinking it over, I suppose parents of primary school kids might think this would add more votes to making high schools a priority.

That kind of thing is a real concern here, where all-day kindergardens are competing for money with goal of a later start time for middle schools (which would mean more money for school bus transportation)

Why should only HS kids get to vote on how district money is spent if we go down that route? Why shouldn't elementary or even as you mentioned kindergarden students begiven a voice?

I think parents would rather determine what their children are learning over what a child would think their peers should learn.

Yeah, if only parents voted. I think bright HS kids probably have a better idea than non-parents who dont even think about the issues, and typically vote for a slate backed by local pols.

Well then they shouldn't be taxed for it then.

This is true. However, you open the floor to the non-bright HS kids too. Kids who's first priority isn't education... and sometimes not even sports!

because they dont think about certain issues, they shouldnt be taxed for it?

Of course non-parents SHOULD think about the issues, as they impact their futures too. Im just saying they usually dont.

My kid complains that the food is health conscious nor appealing, but thats not where the principle concerns are.
