It could have reasonably been perceived as an assassination attempt on a foreign head of state (okay, rear end of state). "Defense of another" justifies homicide in such cases.

Assassination attempt? Did they carry weapons or use any type of violence? They had a guy dressed in beard, pyjama and a funny hat, like Santa Claus.

Er, they were stopped and arrested shortly after clearing the cordons, which obviously were not heavily guarded. They were stopped a block away from Bush which is a good distance.

I mean, if I got arrested a block away from the white house no one would care.

I didn't say actual assassination attempt. I said perceived assassination attempt. Using a fake convoy of official VIP cars to run passed security checkpoints could have led to such a misperception.

Luckily, Australian cops are not as trigger happy as L.A. cops.

Yes, but you have to understand the hype around this 'cordon': this is the 'ring of steel' erected to keep the hordes of unwashed commie protesters someone imagined would descend on Sydney for the week; the barricade to 'keep our leaders safe' in this time of terror, and coinciding with draconian special laws that would have allowed police to imprison excitable protesters without charge or bail for the duration of the APEC summit; in the face of all that, a fake motorcade, with all members carrying fake security passes that quite literally say 'fake!' on them, with one of them dressed as the great satan himself, and they still got through 2 roadblocks! Even Foreign Minister Alexander 'fishnet stockings' Downer found it amusing...
