          • 1 million iphones/2.5 months = around 5m in a year

Asher, you're saying that 500,000,000 cell phones are sold in the US each year (1%)? I'll generally agree on Apple overhyping their phone (it's part of the market strategy), but i think that's a bit in left field ever for you...

Perhaps 500m phones in the world per year (though even that sounds way high to me), but Apple wasn't selling in the global market until just recently...

I'd also note that Aga is about as biased as you, which is what makes these discussions so amusing to the rest of us (unless we want actual unbiased opinions, anyway... You're both selectively ignoring the unuseful information from the other...

            • Another reason not to buy iPhone just yet(http://news.com.com/8300-13579_3-37-...d=Interdigital):

Apple signs iPhone patent deal with Interdigital
              Posted by Tom Krazit

Apple has signed a patent-licensing agreement with a company called InterDigital for what appeared to be $20 million, plus ongoing royalties, that covers the current iPhone and hints at a 3G successor.

Interdigital broke the news in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Thursday, amid all the hubbub related to the iPhone pricing flap. The company said it has signed a seven-year licensing agreement with Apple retroactive to iPhone Day that covers the technology used in the iPhone.

Interdigital develops technology that gets mobile phones onto cellular networks. The company's products and designs are used for older cellular standards, like the EDGE network used by the iPhone, but is focusing most of its current development on designing technology for the WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) and HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) standards that power faster 3G networks.

That would imply that Apple's got a faster 3G iPhone in the works, although that's hardly an unexpected development. The company wants to enter the European mobile phone market in 2007, where 3G networks are far more common. And I think it's pretty safe to say that if Apple is still selling iPhones in seven years--when the license runs out--they'll probably have a 3G iPhone or two.

Interdigital didn't specifically address the terms of the agreement in its filing with the SEC. But Friday morning it issued a press release increasing its third-quarter guidance for patent-licensing revenue to a range of $55.5 million to $56.5 million, up from its previous guidance of $53.5 million to $54.5 million. Plus, the company said it "expects to receive a $20 million payment in the near future in connection with a recently signed license agreement. The revenue associated with this new agreement is reflected in this updated guidance." Hmm.... Investors sure liked the news, driving Interdigital's stock up almost 13 percent just before the close of trading Friday.

When CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at Macworld in January, he made sure to note that Apple had filed for more than 200 patents related to the iPhone. But Apple doesn't develop cellular networking technology, of course. An Apple representative did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the Interdigital patent deal.

The ~1% figure is already in this thread if you'd care to look.

I think you'd be crazy to think Apple can sustain 1 million/2.5 months. The vast majority of sales were made on the opening day. Let's be real for a moment. 1% of the market by the end of the year is being generous.

                  • The concept applies -- built-up hype products always have strong releases. Demand then falls. Only a complete fool would make long-term projections based upon the launch window.

                    • In more recent Apple pwnage of the consumer:

iPod Touch is being crippled so as to not compete with the iPhone too much. Gotta force people to buy those iPhones if they won't do it on their own accord somehow.

iTunes is quickly patched to prevent enterprising individuals from using songs they already paid for as Ringtones. You already bought the full-length, high-quality version from Apple for $0.99, but that apparently doesn't mean you can get the low-fi, 30 second snippit for free! In fact, they rushed out a release to make SURE you pay for that segment of the song you already own.

I don't know that they can manage 5m in the year - although the RAZR certainly did pretty well, and if they follow that pattern of price cuts and dealer incentives, who knows... I was addressing the specific comment that a figure that currently averages to 5m/yr would be 1% of the total sold during that time (which is what marketshare means to me - 1m/2.5 mo is 1% marketshare when 100m are sold over that period of time).

I think software is a bit different also ... something about lack of moving parts or something 1 day sales and 2.5 mo sales are also a bit, hmm, different.

I do doubt that they'd sell 5m if they don't drop the price further, however. On the other hand, you didn't see the insane crowd at the apple store saturday...

Apple seems to think the terrorists do.

From the EULA of iTunes 7 & Quicktime:

You should really drop that. The inventory at the A&TT store is a drop in the bucket, and they probably aren't even counting it.
