For over 2000 (that is two thousand!) years they were the center of the world until they were conquered by Alexander.
Ahem. They were conquered by the Iranians first, under King Cambyses who overthrew Psammetichus.

When Alexander invaded, Egypt was still a province of the Achaemenid Empire.

Egypt remained culturally Egyptian until Alexander came.

Which has nothing to do with who first conquered Egypt- the Macedonians or the Iranian Achaemenid Empire.

Egypt remained for the most part culturally Egyptian even after the foundation of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, with Egyptian women having greater rights than other women in the Hellenic world or the Roman world. Egyptian religious figures were coopted by the Ptolemies and the Romans.

The fact that the Achaemenids respected indigenous religious beliefs in Babylonia and Egypt and elsewhere says an awful lot about the tolerant nature of their empire.
