I caught the pilot episode yesterday. It could have been better. The main problem is that the story has been "constructed," rather than written. Story points are forced into the plot because the producers think this is what will make this "sell."
"Flash," it turns out, gets his name because he's a champion marathoner -- except he's not the emaciated type we've all seen. Rather, he's got lots of muscles because TV lead characters are supposed to have muscles. His best friend is, you guess it, a grinning, savvy black guy. White guy with a black sidekick -- where do they keep coming up with these great new ideas??
They don't want to be racists though, so Ming is no longer Asian, but rather is a white guy who yells alot a makes viscious-sounding threats. O for the days of a cunning Oriental warlord...but alas they are not PC.
Luckily, everyone on Mongo speaks English and is white. Unlike the original Ming, the Ming of this series is not an all powerful Starlord, but rather is a tinplated tyrant who rules a single city on a wild planet. He's powerful though because his city is the planet's only source of potable water.
Ming, his babolicious daughter, and everyone else is searching for the mysterious "Imex." Will Flash find it first? Stay tuned to the next exciting adventure of Flash Gordon!
Good special effects, though.
