  • Flash Gordon, the Series

I caught the pilot episode yesterday. It could have been better. The main problem is that the story has been "constructed," rather than written. Story points are forced into the plot because the producers think this is what will make this "sell."

"Flash," it turns out, gets his name because he's a champion marathoner -- except he's not the emaciated type we've all seen. Rather, he's got lots of muscles because TV lead characters are supposed to have muscles. His best friend is, you guess it, a grinning, savvy black guy. White guy with a black sidekick -- where do they keep coming up with these great new ideas??

They don't want to be racists though, so Ming is no longer Asian, but rather is a white guy who yells alot a makes viscious-sounding threats. O for the days of a cunning Oriental warlord...but alas they are not PC.

Luckily, everyone on Mongo speaks English and is white. Unlike the original Ming, the Ming of this series is not an all powerful Starlord, but rather is a tinplated tyrant who rules a single city on a wild planet. He's powerful though because his city is the planet's only source of potable water.

Ming, his babolicious daughter, and everyone else is searching for the mysterious "Imex." Will Flash find it first? Stay tuned to the next exciting adventure of Flash Gordon!

    Good special effects, though.

Meh. I saw it. Next time I'm prevented from moving past an entryway because the bad guy set up a force field, maybe, just maybe, I'll try stepping backwards and walking out the back door instead of pushing forward. Der.

Saw bits of it. Looked terrible. What was with their obsession with iMacs?

I only read the Post review of it. I bet our Ming's real thrilled that (apparently) his namesake has been changed from an almighty planetary despot into some weenie from another dimension. Maybe that's why he's been less active on here lately, he's busy sending explosives to SciFi in the mail?

Uh, did you guys switch channels after the first hour, because the episode was actually 90 minutes and Flash discovered what the imex was.

            Should I tell?

Now that the Sci-Fi Channel has established a reputation for working miracles reviving hackneyed old sci-fi shows and turnong them into award winning series I had expected better, but sadly the new Flash Gordon is not in the same class as the new Battlestar Galactica.

I know I've seen the guy who plays Flash somewhere else. Did he used to make porn flicks? He sorta acts like he might have.

The secret of iMacs is the most shocking since we discovered the meaning of Zardoz in the Sean Connery movie of the same name.

The best hope for this series is if its revealed that the Ming in the series isn't the real Ming. For decades, he's been masquarding for the real Ming, who's a cunning, all powerful Oriental starlord.

They made a remake of the Flash Gordon series? What was wrong with the original ones?
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
                Once again...

The original series wasn't making any money. That's what wrong with it.

The Sci-Fi series is so boring you can't change channels fast enough. The writer insists on including all sorts of ridiculous backstory for every single character he puts on screen.

Backstory. For Ming. Lol. All the backstory you need for Ming is to put the words "the Merciless" after his name. Backstory complete.

I blame Joss Whedon for this sort of nonsense. If you see him, please kill him for me.

Joss Whedon can actually write though. So backstories are tolerable from him.

This Ming isn't Ming the Merciless, explaining himself to not only his own daughter(thats bad enough) but to underlings?

They're looking for an Imax? Why, there's one next to Waterloo Bridge

No, it seems they were looking for the Imex, which I believe is the cheap south-of-the-border knock off. By displaying crystal-clear, twenty-foot images of tacos and sombreros at an unbeatable price, it would enable them to win the market wars.
