it aint the ribs thats hurting as much as the muscles that attach to your ribs. I'd say 1-2 months before they heal properly, but the symptoms are about the same for a broken rib and a pulled muscle.

I know the feeling. Cracked my ribs in a hockey game once. It was pretty bad. Things got heated up with this one guy, we kind of mauled each other each shift so I went for a big hit, lifted my arms and everything, like a big dirty hit, and he cross checked me at the same time, so it was a clear shot on my ribs and nothing protected me (since my protective gear lifted as I lifted my hands up. So I got the aluminium stick right on my ribs and cracked two of them. Funny thing, didn't hurt that bad when it happened. I guess I was filled with adrenaline and all that stuff.

But afterwards? It did damn hurt . It's not the worst right after, I remember like a week after or so, that's when it hurt the worst. Coughing is the worst. It kind of hurts as well.

So... I feel for you, but it'll be over soon. It's just like that for a while. If they checked it properly, meaning that your ribs are now healing and your longues are fine, no problem. It'll heal by itself, just be careful and try to manage, you'll get over it. But we know, it sucks for a while.

Plus you're a man. You need to crack a rib. It's manly.

            Now wait a minute...

Since when do bones that get broken just miraculously heal by themselves? Don't you need some surgery to set stuff straight or something?

Sometimes they just go back to position where they are just fine and the best thing to do is to let them heal.

Nope, most broken ribs don't move. You just have sit tight and take painkillers.

Broken ribs sometimes just means cracked ribs. ...or the two broken portions could be still aligned. He did go to the hospital.

Still, if they remain so painful he cannot think well enough to work, I'd advise getting another opinion (other than on Poly). The ribs may be healing badly, or they may have slipped.

Many times bones don't crack all the way through and don't need to be set. Happens with fingers often (once last year to me).

Indeed, when I took damage to my ribs playing rugby (think it was just to the intercostal muscles) it was agony, and if aggravated it could bring me to tears. Was a good 2 months before I played rugby again and I didn't feel wholly comfortable afterwards.

As for you going and playing again after that, your poor nerves, trying to send the pain messages to his brain, yet unable to find it

If you damage your ribs (or in my case, most probably the intercostal muscle), the worst thing I found was getting out of bed in the morning, a near impossible maneouver without great pain.

QFT! Getting to a sitting position from lying down was pure agony!

                          6-8 weeks, like any bone.

est & pekka - yes i've got a fairly high pain threshold and when you're playing sport the adrenaline allows you to keep going, but afterwards you suffer for it.

i've been feeling a lot better these last couple of days, just going to take it easy this weekend. thanks to all those who wished me well.
