  • I've broken my ribs and it really hurts

it happened over 2 weeks ago. i was playing football, was fouled and went down awkwardly, played on, was in agony when the game finished. after it not getting any better for 10 days (during which i stupidly played another football match), i went to the hospital and they said i'd broken my ribs, gave me some painkillers and sent me home.

it was painful but manageable, however this week has been awful, i had to leave work yesterday and i'm off again today, because i'm in too much pain to concentrate on anything.

does anyone know how long it takes for ribs to heal and why it hurts so much more now that i'm on painkillers, than it did in the days after i'd done it when i didn't have any meds?

Going on what personal injury clients used to tell me it hurts like hell when you cough or sneeze for about five weeks and then it suddenly goes away completely.

If you are hurting continuously I think you should go see your doctor.

Anyway, if Dr Strangelove comes online you'll get a more informed comment.

if you were a kid they would have healed faster.

my dad says it'll take a month or two, possibly three, for yours to heal tho.

and i think it hurts because you've been moving your ribs regularly when you breath. the only thing i can think to compare it to is getting braces [on your teeth]. the first day it doesn't hurt at all, but then the next days it's really painful because the wire has been tugging at the teeth and the teeth aren't used to the strain. that pain goes away much more quickly tho.

Ok, on a more serious not.

It'll take 4 weeks for it to heal and not feel it anymore. Problem is funny people or pepper and shlt like that.

Laughing, sneezing and coughing is annoying. The more you move, to longer it takes to heal because you always split the fracture.

A friend of mine even broke a rib and pierced a lung...The lung was filling up with blood

              Now THAT hurts.

So stfu and take the pain like a man sissy boy.

Sorry about your ribs, that totally sucks. I broke a rib in a really stupid sledding accident and had to take 6 weeks off from work, doctors orders. By the end of the 6 weeks I was feeling a lot better.

i didn't realise i'd broken them at the time, so when they said they desperate for players, i said i'd play through the pain barrier. scored two goals as well! so as well as being a cripple, i'm now a legend with the works football team.

spec, yeah the things that hurt most are moving and breathing, and it's a bit hard to limit those. although i haven't really helped myself too much. since i did it, i've managed to squeeze in a game of football, a few miles of walking round the gower and a weekend of riotous drinking! i think i may just stay in bed in the evenings from now on…

Ignoring it is fine, which is what you seem to have been doing.

I have broken ribs quite often, skiing. I have a ridiculously high pain threshold so the most I notice is mild discomfort on coughing or sneezing. I've just carried on with the skiing and I've never been advised against that nor has it seemed to do any harm.

I guess you would be wise to avoid more fractures - there is a thing called a flail chest - where the fractures leave a portion of the ribcage separate from the rest - and that is not trivial at all. So I'd guess that football ought sensibly be out for another week or two.

Otherwise some healthy exercise sounds good.
