So, could the igniting Jupiter thing ever work?

      I should say 'artificially' igniting.

Well, to spontaneously ignite it needs to be several orders of magnitude more massive (it's not pure hydrogen). I suppose one of our astrophysicists could speculate on the igniting thing though? Perhaps if temperature and pressure are dramatically increased, fusion could occur at a lower mass?

Saga of the Seven Suns they ignited gas giants......
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

So, is it better to be a hot planet?

Or to be a cool star?

How can this be a planet? I mean, if it's this low mass at that size, it can't be much more than a dense cloud? A hot cloud, but still.

Is it actually possible for us to tell, via these detection methods, if it has (A) rounded itself out and (B) cleared its orbit?

Well, the article states that it was found because it went in front of it's sun, then perhaps we can see it's shape. But I wouldn't really know.

The temperatures in the core are what count. you need extremely high pressures and temperatures of millions of degrees for fusion to occur.
