(I do think that applying to all sex offenders, what the folks who want the law assume applies to child molestors or rapists only, is another big issue) Its surely not intrinsically the same thing as imprisoning a person for being homeless.
The efforts to brand people for life, and to unreasonably restrict thier prospects once they pay their time for their crime(s) are intrinsically the same. It is unjust and tyrannical.

I was just trying to clarify why it has that effect. It does seem to me that there must be many registered sex offenders in Georgia, all but 15 of whom manage to find homes under the law. Now maybe the geography of Augusta makes that city exceptional. Quite possible. Though 15 sounds low for even the number of registered sex offenders in Augusta alone.
The effect is a foreseeable consequence when it becomes acceptable to reimplement the scarlet letter as a matter of public policy.

It has happened, and it will continue to happen so long as legislators feel our criminal justice systems are not enough, and our courts stand by and watch the keystone copper follies in our legislatures.

I say our, because Canadians have picked up the bad habit. We've had AGs proclaim that they have banned citizens from living in entire provinces.

    • Incidently, why stop with kiddie fiddlers?

I want to know if my neighbour killed his wife at some point in the past. It could have an influence on what I do when I hear a fight over there.

I want to know if the guy running the store was ever convicted of any sort of theft or fraud.

I want to know if the guy my daughter is starting to date was ever convicted of a DUI. Wait, don't stop there. I want to know if he's ever had a 24 hour suspension, or was ever questioned by the police in any matter involving a sexual crime. I don't care if he was guilty, or even a suspect. I just want to know!

And I want it all on a website that I can search any time, damnit!

Atlanta is a far more liberal town. So I wouldn't be surprised if there were more homeless shelters in Atlanta that accept sex offenders.

So, let's get this straight. A guy who is a "sex offender" because he was 20, while his girlfriend was 17, "can't be cured and [doesn't] belong in society anymore"? Really?

And yes, those type of folks are labeled sex offenders if the age of consent law is that sloppy.
I'm disappointed to see that our resident sex offender of Apolyton (whom I think was korn469, but am not so sure anymore) hasn't arrived to this thread. I remember how he told his story in another thread: he had sex with a girl who was more than willing when he was 18 and she 16 or something equally ridiculous, and got into serious trouble for years because of that.

This is true, but when it's a person who commited a grieveous crime against a child, or a violent rapist, or murderer who got off too light, I just don't care.

                    • Well put, Kataphraktoi.

There is a scene in A Man For All Seasons which made a big impression on me. More faces his son-in-law, Roper, who is a passionate man urging the confrontation of evil. More asks him whether, in order to get at the devil, he would cut down all that forest of laws standing in his way. Roper says that of course he would.

Whereupon More asks him what he then would do when the last law fell and the devil in all his power turned and confronted Roper, nothing left standing between them?

Getting no answer he says to his son-in-law that irritating as the forest of laws may appear they should be tolerated and cherished - the protection they afford us is an enormously valuable thing.

Leaving alone how you feel about child molesters, keep in mind that sex offences include indecent exposure, sexual harrassment, date rape, and often consensual oral and anal between teenagers.

I never said I wanted it done. I just said I don't care. Just like when mobster or gangsters kill each other. Good riddance, but it should still be against the law and the guilty parties prosecuted. As a whole, injustice must be fixed, but as for these particular victims, I shed no tears.
