Well, it's true that nothing warms the heart and uplifts the soul quite like the history of the communications industry. I was on the edge of my seat cheering for Mr. Kane's circulation numbers at one point. Ultimately, though, it's a flawed film.Originally posted by lord of the mark

No, it's the whole "main character is a pompous ******* who gets exactly what he deserves but isn't quite unpleasant enough for it to be entertaining in a vindictive way" thing.

Yes, I know, he yearns for his childhood innocence, blah blah blah. He has plenty of opportunities to realize that wealth does not make you invincible, immortal or omnipotent, but he ignores them all and chooses to waste time and money stroking his ego for decades. Tragic heroes are traditionally victims of circumstance and of isolated character flaws. Everything that happens to Kane is pretty much entirely his fault. He's one gigantic character flaw, and I can't think of any redeeming traits he has that aren't poisoned by his monstrous egotism.Originally posted by Hueij
Well, all I can say is "Rosebud"... Maybe you should watch it again.

Which is the whole point of the movie...
BTW, R.I.P. Bill Walsh as well, if we can include him as well into the title (he's far more important than the other two IMO)...

Tom Snyder's not dead as long as Dan Ackroyd still lives.
(Though, in truth, I thought he'd died some time ago.
But Bergman...Bergman's a true loss. Not that he didn't have a full, amazing, productive life -- but still a loss. RIP Ingmar; you're one of the geniuses who taught me to love film.
