Option 1. DSL. $20-$30/month, 1-2Mbps range, slower if further out. Requires a land line (additional $10-$15 if you don't already have one).

Option 2. Cable Modem. $40-50/month, 3-5 Mbps range (can go higher) max speed but can drop drastically in heavy usage periods. Requires basic cable (additional $30ish if you don't already have it).

Option 3. T1 line. More expensive, varies by how much.

Option 4. Cell phone internet. $60ish a month for decent broadband speed. Can be used with laptop anywhere that you get service from the cell provider. 756k to 1.5mbps from what I recall (Apo what are you getting?).

DSL is the best option for people with a land line who are fine with 1-2 Mbps and live in a city. Cable is better for people in smaller areas or who need faster download, or don't have a land line. Hopefully cell internet gets cheaper, that's the best overall of course if you don't mind the slightly slower speeds.
Poor Americans... ADSL lines are the best option, in Norway, where everything is expensive(well, we DO earn a bit more than others too though), a 4 Mb line cost some 40-50 dollars IIRC the exchange rate correctly. In other European countries, like Sweden, you can get ADSL2+ with a significant higher speed for about same speed I've heard.

I have that for free via sprint.

Until they cut you off because the unlimited data plan specifically disallows using it for tethered internet and you go over the hidden bandwidth cap

yeah I've had it with my internet connection. tomorrow I'm getting dsl

I keep getting disconnected, and have frequent slow downs. But only at night. maybe someone in my neighborhood is illegally tapping the line and sucking all the bandwidth.
