Well, it is broadband through a USB hookup from a cell phone service here. Considering high speed would otherwise be about the same price, this is a decent deal. Internet in US in a major city:
Option 1. DSL. $20-$30/month, 1-2Mbps range, slower if further out. Requires a land line (additional $10-$15 if you don't already have one).
Option 2. Cable Modem. $40-50/month, 3-5 Mbps range (can go higher) max speed but can drop drastically in heavy usage periods. Requires basic cable (additional $30ish if you don't already have it).
Option 3. T1 line. More expensive, varies by how much.
Option 4. Cell phone internet. $60ish a month for decent broadband speed. Can be used with laptop anywhere that you get service from the cell provider. 756k to 1.5mbps from what I recall (Apo what are you getting?).
DSL is the best option for people with a land line who are fine with 1-2 Mbps and live in a city. Cable is better for people in smaller areas or who need faster download, or don't have a land line. Hopefully cell internet gets cheaper, that's the best overall of course if you don't mind the slightly slower speeds.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

I pay £30 a month (around $60) and I get cable broadband, cable TV (with the CatchUp Option, the ability to watch most shows up to seven days after they've been broadcast anytime I want. The "CatchUp" option is called "On Demand" in the states, and slowly more networks are coming to it.
I pay $40 a month for cable modem with 6 Mbps download speeds. I tend to watch a lot of TV, so I have digital cable plus with a sports package (for the soccer) and two premium multiplexes with their On Demand libraries (HBO & Starz), with a High Definition cable box and a DVR. On Demand only applies to certain channels [premium channels ie HBO/Showtime/Cinemax, and a few others]. It isn't available on very many channels other than premium ones, at least at the moment.

Anyway what you care about is ping and stability, I don't know if DSL gives better or worse pings (probably depends on network traffic) but it's definitely more stable.Comment
