They took the name in the early 80s, when they broke off from the MNLF; the other "MILF" wasn't in use as a slang term untilthe late 90s. A coincidence, methinks.

If I were the MILF, I'd fight to the death. Once they're rounded up, they'll be subject the Philippines' rather, um, unique form of cruel and unusual punishment.

Probably a pre-op transsexual; not an uncommon phenom in the Phils, and not uncommon in Phil prisons.

Thousands of people have fled their homes in Jolo as troops pursue Muslim militants blamed for killing more than 20 soldiers, officials said Saturday.

Jolo brigade commander, Col. Anthony Supnet, said his troops would continue to hunt the gunmen even though they had broken up into smaller groups and scattered into the hinterlands of Jolo.
So 8000 people (the article quantifies it later) have been displaced from their homes so far, while the guerillas have broken into small bands and faded back into the jungle. Marines are gonna get some? More like the people of Jolo are gonna get it -- right up the ass.

Supnet said the attackers were members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), a group that had signed a peace accord with the government in 1996, and the Abu Sayyaf, an extremist group not covered by the accord.

He accused the MNLF of helping the Abu Sayyaf, saying that a prominent Abu Sayyaf member who was killed in the fighting had an MNLF membership card.
Oh, and that's just lovely. The MILF is a terrorist group that broke with the MNLF; the MNLF, while hardly innocent, has been largely responsible for keeping the peace down south and keeping the situation from deteriorating any more than it has.

But now we've got a general claiming, based on the most absurd evidence (gosh, a terrorist could never have a reason to carry an identity card associating himself with legit organizations, could he?), that the MNLF is involved. Why do this? Because the government in Manila hates the MNLF, partly because they're Muslim and partly because the MNLF runs their turf (the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, or ARMM) far better than Manila runs the country.

So now they'll use the Abu Sayyaf killings as an excuse to settle a political score and go after the MNLF, the same way they've used the communist insurgency in the north to go after labor unions trying to organize plantation workers (especially in the president's home province). Yea!

The Marines deserve to get some. But this has all the earmarks of a gold-plated Philippine clusterf*ck, the net result of which will be to destabilize a fragile peace in the south while Abu Sayyaf gets away with murder -- again.

As far as separatist group acronyms go... they're in good company with OPM in Irian Jaya and FARC in Columbia. Of course... FARC is only a funny acronym if you pronounce your Rs like an Australian or a Bostonian.
