The UK grew by 7.7% from 1971 to 2005 from 55.9 million to 60.2 million. That's an interesting definition of "unlimited immigration" and "population booming".
Unlimited was poor wording, there's no such thing in a modern country. But the 50's-60's saw very widespread immigration from india/pakistan/west indies, this would be masked somewhat as we had high natural population growth too, but the immigration was pretty large scale.
My fellow dodgy American, Eli, and I, cannot answer that

I was little young to really know her when she was in her prime (i was 10 when major took over) but the results alone show she was right about a lot of things. I did economics A-level, no further but my heavily old labour, welsh mining family teacher grudgingly admitted she was the right man () at the right time. All labour really needed to do was make the bank of england independent and watch the golden years come in.
The big blunder economy wise was getting the UK in the E.R.M, it wrecked us in the early 90's and is imho the main reason we aren't in the single currency now.

We're not talking about economic growth in the 50s and 60s, though, we're talking about it now. And your population growth hasn't been "booming" for quite some time, especially compared to places like Canada, the US, Australia or even France.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It was a precurser to the single currency in a way. It set our exchange rate within a tight band against the other euro currencies in an attempt to harmonise them in advance of the single currency coming in.
I can't remember the exact details but either we were booming and euroland was stagnating or vice versa but having our currency fixed to the euro rate ended up causing a stock market crash. (george soros saw it coming and profited greatly from it..)

Ah, ok. Thanks for the explanation.

Because there's only banking an industry in an economy?
We have focussed on the things we are best at, Germany might move on from stagnation if it did the same.
Unfortunately sonny, an economy needs heavy industries as a basis to rely upon.
And as i said, those are crumbling right now in the UK because for over 15 years there wasnt any money to make the investments needed to sustain your competitivness.
And Germany is doing quite well if I compare the number of German versus the number of UK products in the market.
