I find it difficult to understand why the Japanese don't make a sweeping apology for these and the other war crimes they committed during WW2. It seems to me that it would ultimately be better to just get it over with.
The main reason the US didn't pursue the investigation of many of Japan's war crimes was to avoid weakening the fledgling democracy they were nurturing in Japan."I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

I remember reading evidence to that effect years ago but can't be arsed to dig it up again... is anyone more familiar with this aspect of the story?
