When has industrialisation ever been painless?

Its never been. But ultimately it has the seeds of its own self-correction, in the generation of a democratic political dynamic that enables the polity to weigh the benefits of industrialization against other values. The very authoritarian nature of the Chinese system, and the apparent unwillingness of the leadership to open up in significant ways, even as unprecedently fast growth takes place, is what is a gnawing concern, at least to me.

what happened to the percentage of britons living in poverty between 1763 and 1868, or 1945?

Absolute poverty is less likely to start a revolution, than A. Dramatic inequality B. Frustrated aspirations for a say in the running of society, esp on issues that directly impact peoples own lives.

Which is to say, I think the possibility of a socialist revolution in China cannot be rule out.
