In a few high density urban areas, centrally generated steam is sold to nearby users, who can then avoid having to have their own heating system, gas powered or otherwise. Im not real familiar with the economics of such systems. My impression is that most are fairly old, and probably pre-date cheap gas heat.Originally posted by Colon™

We had nat gas growing up in Brooklyn in the 1960's. In fact Brooklyn Union Gas was one of the largest companies with an HQ in Brooklyn. I think they have it in Manhattan. They laid cable tv in Manhattan in the 70s, and in the rest of NYC in the 80s. I assume they have or are laying FIOS cable. Yeah. Actually, South Korea has probably the most advanced underground infrastructure construction capability in the world. It's a bit on the pricey side, though, but not compared with the economic impact of aboveground construction someplace like Seoul or NYC.
