If I were to give to charity, I would give direct to charity. Tax savings alone mean that my $5 spend becomes worth over $8 to the charity of my choice.

Tax is a very good point.

I bet most places tax you on your winnings.

So even if you win back what you spent on tickets, you end up giving a heap of that to the government!

Not so! For example, few people know that your local casino will print up a tax form which shows your annual win/lose so that if your losses exceed your winnings you can get back the $ they took out of your jackpot.

To do this you need to use the players card they offer.

For the lottery, I haven't a clue how that might work.

All things considered, it's best not to gamble.
