I play every 3-5 months whenever the mood strikes. I understand stats and there are far better games if you want to gamble but I enjoy the little discussions with the wife on how we would spend our winnings.

OH and I always play if the jackpot gets huge and an office pool springs up. I think of it as "feeling like an idiot" insurance. I am willing to spend a buck or two to avoid that incredibally tiny tiny chance that they might actually win and I would be the idiot who chose not to participate--

      Lotteries.

I am working on a lotteries case at the moment. The mechanics, economics and psychology of it is very interesting.

I only play the lottery when a group of people at work pool together for an entry. I refuse to see them all win, quit and leave me holding the bag, so I get in the pool, just in case.

I haven't played in many moons. Though I have spent a buck here & there. Other people keep winning my jackpot, though.

                    No.

I do occasionally play poker, and have went to Atlantic City (casino's). Poker is a decent game, and the casino is a social activity (albeit, expensive). On the other hand, I don't see what fun can be had by playing the lottery.

                      e.g

Lotteries are played more by people who are poor and uneducated (often a hand in hand comment, so it may only be due to one of the factors).

Further to the above, lotteries are more popular in the developing world.

Lotteries are more dependent on the prize amount than the chances of actually winning because the odds can not be conceptualised.

Change a picture on a scratchcard every couple of weeks and people will be more likely to play again.

Lotteries are antithetical to the purpose of redistribution of wealth and stated government aims of taxation, taxing the poor and giving to the rich - almost by definition.

When we go to the local pub for a bite and a beer Dolores likes to get a keno just for fun. Once she was bummed because she didn't get a single # correct on a pick 10. Fortunately I knew that pays $5, and then she was so happy!
