I keep hearing stuff like "The warmest period since the 1500s". Well wtf happened in the 1500s? Has anybody looked to make sure that it is not happening again?

Why, in 2007, are we just now ruling out the sun as a cause? I mean, c'mon...if we are looking at warming, wouldn't that be a great place to start? What have we not yet looked at?

Maybe it is people that are causing warming...maybe its not. I think all that article does is confirm that research into the causes is not far enough along to draw concrete conclusions.

Of course it will never hurt to make the economy a bit more "green", but I see no reason to start wrecking economies to restrict output just yet.

I'm not going to bother, but you might google "population of Tibet" for an estimate.

Thing is, though, those concerts really ought to be playing Tibetan music. Hooray for throat-singing!

The scientific consensus is that it is overwhelmingly likely that human activity is responsible for current climate change. The only people who dispute this are a few wackos, those funded by the fossil fuel industry and people like Bjorn Lomborg, who just want to be "different". These people are on the same level as the 9/11 conspiracy theorists. Of course it's hard to prove with absolute certainty that 9/11 was an inside job, but it is incredibly unlikely, given the evidence that we have.

There's a great deal of money being spent on PR spin to convince everyone that human responsibility for climate change is still an open question.

You don't have to wreck the economy to do it. Of course we will have to "wreck" some sectors, but others will arise to replace them. If human beings can organize themselves to send people to the moon, they can deal with this. Nuclear power is one option that some of the greenies don't like, so if you want to annoy them, argue for that.

Gore's concert was simply to raise awareness and counter some of the spin coming from the other side. How evil that someone should do this...

No... The most likely hypothesis would be their stated reasons until you provide countering proof. Conjecture on motive is at best spurious. (BTW Participation in other XYZ Aid events hardly counts as proof.)

Awareness of global warming. First I've ever heard of it.

Given that they have participated in events that are no different, other than the cause involved, they are being silly. Of course people know about climate change, but it doesn't exactly loom large in their minds. Events like this, and like Live Aid are meant to make it loom larger (which was the point). Of course, holding a giant worldwide media event is not going to do this. Similarly, corporations spend millions on worldwide advertising campaigns because they know it will be an absolute waste of time.

And Daltrey is clearly being a clown. The sort of guy who says "let's not spend 10 quid now, so we can save a thousand down the road". Either he's an idiot, or he's being disingenuous. I guess it's Al Gore's fault for not wanting to drag out the usual wheezing suspects.

I guess your posts are useful in that someone can pretty much guarantee infallibility if they disagree with you.

And yet no evidence other than conjecture of motive. This despite the fact that hidden in their commentary exists (for those capable of discernment a stretch for me to assume you capable of) the real meaning that they felt massive displays of wasted energy hypocritically belittled the supposed cause. Unlike Live Aid et. al. where monies generated actually went to feed the starving thus making stronger the case for public awareness as opposed to hypocritically mocking it.

And Daltrey is clearly being a clown.

I'm sorry I hadn't realized Al was recruiting the talent. Heck he must have known all of the band managers and the going rates being personally in charge of the line ups. I suppose that being the case it would explain the rousing success it was critically acclaimed to be.

Certainly is interesting what's happening in the other hemisphere right now, especially with this current solar cycle as it is..
