  • Global warming has been stopped

    There was LiveEarth yesterday, and we're all safe now

    Seriously, if you agree with the idea that GW is - at least to some degree - manmade or not, are big events of that kind anything more than marketing campaigns for singers, bands etc.? And Al Gore of course?

    You know, it wouldn't kill people to do at least a little research on Teh Intertubeses. Five seconds on Google hardly counts as a "major undertaking."

    LIVE EARTH - GREEN EVENT GUIDELINES
    With support from the U.S. Green Building Council, creators of the LEED Green Building Rating System, Live Earth will implement new Green Event Guidelines. Learning from LEED, the green event guidelines holistically address the key areas of impact of a large live event - including recycling and composting, food and beverages, packaging, transportation, energy, water usage, and the event site itself. The guidelines also place special emphasis on measurable improvements.

    John Picard, the award-winning sustainability expert and former member of President Clinton's Green White House task force, is leading the Live Earth team of sustainability experts. By embedding a team of world-class sustainability experts within the production staff, waste streams will be designed out prior to its negative environmental impact. From power generation at the concerts to garbage generated by concert goers, Live Earth will bestow an eco-friendly legacy on the live entertainment industry.

    Among the steps being taken are:

    * All electricity that powers the shows will be from renewable sources, either through utility supplied renewable energy, biodiesel generators, or renewable energy credits.
    * Concessionaires will be encouraged to use and directed to suppliers of agricultural/ biodegradable plastics (i.e. made from corn). Also, concessionaire waste will be minimized through a comprehensive recycling and reuse system organized at the venue.
    * Venue offices, walkways, etc will be optimized to use as little electricity as possible.
    * The entire production design will follow sustainable light design principles. Production lighting will include the use of LED light bulbs, signage will be produced from recycled or agricultural materials, and some tickets will be integrated with public transportation access and green messaging.
    * Live Earth staff and artist air travel will be offset through carbon credits.
    Ground travel will be hybrid or high-efficiency vehicles, where possible.

    Steps being taken in our offices:

    * Set computers, printers, etc. to go to "sleep" after a few minutes.
    * Print and copy double-sided to reduce paper use
    * Use recycled paper products
    * Purchase furniture that is made of recycled products, and recycle or donate once it's no longer needed
    * Replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs
    * Turn off computers and lights at night - install power strips so it's easy to turn off all electronics at once
    * Encourage recycling by having bins accessible around the office
    * Have reuseable ceramic mugs for coffee or water, rather than disposalbe ones
    * Encourage carpools
    * Purchase carbon offsets

    "The green event guidelines are a starting point," commented John Rego, Live Earth's Environmental Advisor. "They give us roadmap to focus our efforts, goals by which to grade ourselves, and a way to track improvements over time." Rego continued: "The guidelines are breaking new ground for the live event industry, so it's going to be a learning process for us all. Beyond improving our actual environmental footprint, I expect our greatest contribution will be educating the thousands of people who are involved in an event of this scale on how to do better - knowledge that we're confident they'll take to their next event."

          I've been hearing people whine ignorantly about it all week. This was a preemptive strike against lazy morons who inevitably will.

              anything more than marketing campaigns for singers, bands etc.? And Al Gore of course
              Since the only effect outside of the concert arenas themselves was to promote " marketing campaigns for singers, bands etc.? And Al Gore of course," who cares how much pollution they didn't create. They could have not held the event at all, produced no pollution whatsoever, and been closer to their goal.

              These sort of events are always stupid. 90% of the people in attendance don't give a **** about the cause, they just want to hear good music. How many people really care about Tibetan freedom, lets be honest?

                “The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert. I can’t believe it. Let’s burn even more fuel,†Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who and participant in the Live Aid and Live8 concerts for Africa told the British paper, The Sun. “We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge I don’t know what a rock concert’s ever going to do to help.â€

                The lead singer of the rock band Muse, Matt Bellamy, referred to the musicians’ consumption to participate in the concerts as “private jets for climate changeâ€.

                “When we’re using enough power for 10 houses just for (stage) lighting… It’d be a bit hypocritical,†Matt Helders, drummer of the popular British band, the Arctic Monkeys told the Agence France-Presse.

                Most surprisingly, Bob Geldof, the musician and Nobel Prize nominee who founded the Live Aid and Live8 concerts, singled out Gore in particular, asking, “Why is Gore actually organising them? To make us aware of the greenhouse effect? Everybody’s known about that problem for years.â€

                      biodiesel generators, or renewable energy credits
                      lol @ both of them as being useful.

                      I agree this is again another hypocritical stunt, it's just like all those damn Live Aid type stuff where people with £50mill+ in the bank urge you to give to help others. Go donate £45mill yourself you **** and you can still live without want.

                        Buenos Aires sees rare snowfall
                        Snow in Buenos Aires - the first since 1918
                        Buenos Aires residents came out on the streets to see the snow
                        Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, has seen snow for the first time in 89 years, as a cold snap continues to grip several South American nations.

                        Temperatures plunged to -22C (-8F) in parts of Argentina's province of Rio Negro, while snow fell on Buenos Aires for several hours on Monday.

                        Two deaths from exposure were reported in Argentina and one in Chile.

                        In Bolivia, heavy snowfall blocked the nation's main motorway and forced the closure of several airports.

                        In Argentina, several provinces in the Andes have been placed under a storm alert, according to the national weather centre.

                        But thousands of people cheered in the streets of Buenos Aires at the sight of the capital's first snowfall since 1918.

                        "Despite all my years, this is the first time I've ever seen snow in Buenos Aires," 82-year-old Juana Benitez was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency.

                        Energy strain

                        In Chile, temperatures dropped to -18C (0F) in parts of Araucania region in the south.

                        Meteorologists predict that the cold snap will last for several more days.

                        Bitterly cold weather in May caused some 20 deaths and forced the Argentine authorities to ration supplies as the country's energy system came under strain.

                        Monday's snowstorm struck on a national holiday in Argentina. The authorities are watching the demands on the power grid as the country gets back to work on Tuesday.

                        However, ministers have already appealed to consumers to save energy where they can.

                        Correspondents say although Argentina's economy has been growing strongly in recent years, there has not been sufficient investment in infrastructure.

                        Argentine meteorologists are predicting more cold and even freezing weather over the next few days.

                        It probably is problematic to handle snow if it 90 years since last time

                              No. It's just the most likely hypothesis. They were happy to play Live Aid II IIRC, and their arguments would shame even a tabloid.

                              And happily today, another favourite right wing blowhard excuse for climate change collapsed.

                              I'm guessing the response from the Lomborg-***** will be that the Royal Society is a liberal conspiracy. They should just give up and go back to UFO conspiracies.
