  • Teh Cell Phone & Service Thread

I bought a new cell phone and plan the other day, to replace my lame Moto SLVR on Cingular PayAsYouGo.

    Phone: HTC Mogul (aka PPC-6800)

It's much smaller than I thought it would be , runs WM6, and I just updated it with a bunch of programs/custom settings/etc.

Cost me $399 through telesales, minus $111 service credit, minus $50 coupon, and I'm going to send in for a $75 rebate, an iffy $100 rebate (supposed to work for all Sprint Smartphones, but doesn't list the Mogul since it's so new), and I'll try for another $50 coupon.

Teh Plan : SERO (Sprint Employee Referral Offer)

    -500 anytime minutes
-Free Nights & Weekends starting at 7pm
    -Unlimited data access
    -Unlimited text and MMS messages

    All for $30 a month

I'm on a family plan through Sprint that serves all of my needs. I don't pay much per month because a good friend of mine who happens to work for RadioShack is very, very good at working the system.

The phone I own is a crappy refurbished Sanyo SCP-7300 with a failing battery. I'll be getting a new phone soon when this one finally gives up on me. I'm open to suggestions.

      oh dear god that's hideous.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Apple sure got another hit on their hands. Its not perfect, but it certainly is the coolest cellphone on the market right now. I'm not sure they'll dominate the market this time: its insanely competitive. You can expect iPhone clones in a couple of months...

Just like the Wii, iPhone is so revolutionary that no competition will be around for several years.

Besides, Apple's real advantage lies in iTune and its interface design. Other tech companies, mostly infested with anti-social geeks, won't catch up for a long long time. Deep-pocketed Microsoft, Sandisk, Sony already already banged their heads futilely in the MP3 market. Why should Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Palm fare any better? I only see Nokia and Research in Motion as serious competition to Apple, with Samsung as the wild card.

Also, Apple is targeting for a small percentage of the cellphone market, and it's competing in a market segment not even Motorola and Samsung can keep up with.

I am thinking I need a new phone. I got a T-Mobile (had X-Cingular before) because my family all used it, but they aren't as much now (my sister no longer works for T-Mobile). The phone is getting a bit beat up, and is 2 years old now (and the recharger doesn't like to work).

Additionally, I am likely paying too much per month.

                      Verizon

I really don't care for the iPhone... used one at the Apple store the other day. AT&T can have it as far as I'm concerned. I'm already focusing on the LG VX8700:

Its a consumer phone for the people with money to spend. The pros who are using Blackberries are not gonna switch anytime soon.

Probably a real cheap price for North America, but cellphone service there is expensive.

In Hong Kong, $16 a month will get you 3G coverage with 1200 free minutes + 800 minutes intraservice. $25 will get you 2g coverage with 1400 min free + 1000 min intra service.

Price in Hong Kong started dropping a couple of years after the rules changed to allow people to change telecom companies while keeping their telephone numbers.

                            Just try it.

iPhone's features are not revolutionary, its interface is.

Same deal with Wii, none of its components or games are revolutionary, but it's the interface that makes the difference.

It's a pity that Microsoft and Sony still don't get it.

Personally, I'm waiting for more reviews and I want to be sure it does not have any annoying bugs.

I never tried it, but the interface sure is revolutionary and seems like the way to go. Except for the virtual keyboard, that it. I'm not sure I'd like to type stuff on that.
