  • Robots in Disguise [Transformers Movie --- Possible Spoilers]

I just came back from watching the Transformers movie on opening night here.

I have to say that it was rather spectacular

Particularly funny about the experience was the spontaneous applause when Optimus Prime made his first appearance and when he said his first lines

So, is anyone else going to see this?

Maybe ironically. I think the toys look cooler than the movie. Marketing

Yea, that was one of the things I didn't like as well. At one point, everything is happening and it's very difficult to tell who's who. Most of the Decepticons were grey while they used to have very distinct color schemes in the cartoons/toys.

Damn, you'd think with all of the hype behind this that they would have tried to keep things visually sound. As I understand it, this is an SFX driven movie (though what action movie isn't nowadays?).

It is, but it's more driven by visual effects rather than sound effects. The distinct "transform-sound" was hardly audible at times.

What was in it's place? Theme music? Background noise? Nerd applause?

I always hated Optimus Prime and his whole holier-than-thou attitude.

Mix of the transform-sound and background noise, and sometimes music, but I still think they should have pushed it more to the foreground. In my experience, it was rather inconsistent, some instances were more noticeable than others.

Wow, it's already playing? I missed that, I thought it was later in the month... Gonna be a busy week then: will be seeing Die Hard 4.0, Transformers AND the Harry Potter premiere

It was originally scheduled to open on July 4, but it was changed to July 2 (today).

Transformers is a film made for prepubescent boys with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Things that struck me as being particularly awful:
                        • The boy hero is a sleazy, awkward, goofy jerk.
                        • The romantic development between jerk boy and hot but tramp stamped heroine is ridiculous.
                        • Might as well have been watching Terminator 2 during some scenes.
                        • Action sequences hopelessly incoherent.
                        • Action never lets up - you need a break to absorb and appreciate dramatic scenes - if it is just go go go like a music video, you are left numb.
                        • Obvious product placement.
                        • The main villains don't feature much at all - especially Megatron, who is encased in ice for 85% of the film.
                        • Holes in plot you could drive an Optimus Prime through - for instance, how could such a sophisticated robot like Megatron mess up his entry into Earth's atmosphere?
                        • Almost no background information is given about the motivations of these incredible robots.

So yeah, leave this one for the young boys if you are over 20 and you don't have much cash to squander on Hollywood crap.

No, it was made for those of us who loved the series when we were little kids 20 years ago

Was it made for Transformers fans, or was it made because Hollywood can't be bothered coming up with original ideas anymore?

For all we know, Hasbro probably lobbied some Hollywood executives so they could get their Transformer toys in production again.

Without exception, every boy who sees this film will be nagging their parents raw to buy them Optimus Prime and co. Hell, even I would like to go and buy Optimus Prime, and I'm 34!

In this case I don't give a damn, this is one movie I've been waiting for for 20 years

I actually still have some of my old Transformer toys from the '80s
