  • Will there never be any wars in Europe again?

ever is a long time, I know. And I'm mainly talking about major wars involving several countries. It gives me hope to the future of the world.

I suppose it is possible for groups of people's value and belief systems to overlap enough that wars are improbable at best. It happened in the U.S. There was a time when states could fight amongst each other, but this is highly improbable today. Has Europe come to this state? So many wars over the ages, it's weird to think there will be no more in that continent.

And yes I know about the Kosovo war and other conflicts. They seem minor compared to the world wars, napoleanic, and 30 years war. And with hope, a lot of the disputes of the 90's wars have been resolved. Though the status of Kosovo is still in question.

Maybe one day the people of the world can share enough in common with each other to not want to wage war with each other. Perhaps world peace is possible after all? I used to think it was not, and urged war with those against us like in the middle east. Instead I would like to see further globalization. Perhaps war against terrorism is not the answer. We should not be going to war in the middle east, but attempting to bridge the gap and achieve a similar belief system.

So use this thread to show how I am wrong, and outline possible major european wars in the future.

"Never" is one hell of a long time. While the EU is likely to provide long-term stability, there are a few potential flashpoints.

One possibility is religious conflict. If serious terrorist activity started kicking off out of somewhere like Albania, Chechenya or Bosnia, it's not unthinkable for military action to be taken by the other nations. The events in the Balkans in the 90's demonstrated that the potential is there.

A second possibility, looking back to the first half of the 20th century, is conflict between states of the former USSR. Within the last year there has been tension between Russia and Ukraine over resources.

Finally- a longer shot would be a re-run of the Cod War, with tension between Britain and Iceland over resources or even land, as new volcanic territories pop up in disputed waters.

Is it just me, or has the thread title some sort of sad undertone?

Yes. The ME Caliphate will once again invade Europe sometime around 90-100 years from now. The tension between Mexifornia and the US will keep anyone from the Americas from getting involved.

If there is one thing for sure, it is that the future is anybody's guess.

I was going to mention that in my post, but forgot.

I was watching the history channel the other day and they were talking about the end of the sun, and I said to myself this isn't right. It should be on the future channel.

I'm sure there'll be future wars in Europe. In the (very) long run, there can be wars anywhere, we just cannot foresee possible substantial conflicts over [insert key resource here].
And, more immediately, on the Balcan, there is still potential for a few more wars, the risk is not over yet. And who knows what may happen in Moldova, or southern Russia...

If something happened that caused the worlds food supply to drop sharply, then any country that couldn't feed itself (most European countries) would be fighting for more land.

Caveat - this is future history, and probably off topic for here, but what the hell

If food supply dropped, the price would go up, and Euros would continue to trade goods and services for it. It would be the LDCs that would starve.

Then, it will be time to remind that the EU agricultural policy was precisely conceived and implemented to face this situation; the EU has enough land to feed all EU citizens.

A Czech friend and I were pretty much in agreement that no matter how mediocre the E.U. may get, it's infinitely preferable to what happened in the 19th and 20th Centuries in Europe.

His family had been imprisoned under the Habsburgs, then again under the Nazis, then he had had to go into exile from the Soviet backed regime.

the biggest threat I see to europe is muslim immigratoin. Although if they were properly assimilated, this wouldn't be a problem. I know it's pc to encourage differences, and respect their culture. But I think immigrants should blend in. You don't see me waving around a german flag do ya?
