Wasn't this proposed project a major issue in the general election you had just last month? And as such, haven't the voters already had their say - and sanctioned it?

If the alternative is a fossil fueled Alcoa plant, choose the dam. I have to live with seeing a yellow cloud every morning and crappy air quality from the Alcoa plant around here.

It's all relative. That's how you view it. The polish dudes are probably as happy as pigs in slop.

Why didn't Iceland decide to go all geothermal? Isn't it usually mentioned as an example of having plenty of geothermal power?

Don't worry about these Poles. Worry about all Icelanders living next to this seemingly crappy-built dam

I don't think Geothermal has the grunt required for heavy industry. Here's some perspective. The bluff aluminium smelter in New Zealand consumes 13% of the countries entire elecitricty output - it's powered by a hydroeletric powerplant in Fiordland (taking advantage of the height differential between a lake and the sea using tunnels, it's not a dam per-se)

When you consider New Zealand has (significantly more than) 10x the population of Iceland, if things scale proportionally, a similar smelter would consume 130% of the power of all of Iceland.

Geothermal is not going to cut it.

edit: It's also worth noting that Geothermal is a lot more efficient for home heating (through heat exchange) than raw power generation, geothermal has more potential to save power used on heating, than to generate power. Which gets back to the "it's not a grunty power source", unlike water+gravity.

The dam will drown unique enviroment and natural wonders (the icelandic "Grand canyon" for instance).

This is a very short summary but thats basicly what it is about..

In the shortest way possible its a concious decision of ****ting in the swimming pool.

ALCOA is an interesting neighbor. The people of Iceland will have jobs forever.

ALCOA's plant in East Tennessee still operates today for the simple fact that if they ever shut down then the environmental cleanup they will be required to do would be in the billions of dollars.

ok, I have a question about Iceland - I've seen some dark haired olive skinned Icelanders and I'm wondering if the Vikings interbred with a native indian/eskimo/lapp people. Were the Vikes the first there? Isn't Bjork non-Norse?

You know, people could dye their hair and get a tan, it's been known to happen.

That said, there are Alpine type genetic traits among some Western country Norwegians (with straight, black hair and medium pale skin), so those characteristics may have gotten carried to Iceland by some of the early settlers.

There weren't any indigenous people in Iceland before the first "wave" of settlement by small numbers of Irish monks in the ~800's a.d. Icelanders have long been known for having one of the most localized and isolated genetic pools of any major population today.
