Everyone knew something evil's going on in eastern India. The money was disappearing. Simply as that. People could not buy anything, for the coins were missing. The authorities minted millions of new coins, but in vain - although long queues were waiting for them in the banks, they were disappearing as soon as they appeared.
People were reduced to begging for change, just like in South Park episode.

But fear not, aneeshm.
The source of the problem was revealed -
MUSLIMS.

Well, Bangladeshis and their indian colaborants, precisely.

It turned out that indian coins, which are made of stainless steel, were being of much value in teh evil, muslim, Bangladesh. 1 rupia in India was worth 35 rupia in Bangladesh.
They were used for making razors. At first, the production was made in Bangladesh, but soon razor factories appeared in India itself as well.

Najbardziej odczuwalny jest brak monet w mieście Agartala położonym przy granicy z Bangladeszem. Władze hinduskie podejrzewają również, że jest to głÃ³wny ośrodek kontrabandy.

Anyway, this sounds suspicious. Isn't there a cheeper way to get razors than manufacturing them small scale from coins?

For example, they could buy stainless steel from the same company that sells it to the Indian mints. They probably wouldn't mind getting 35 times better price for it from the razor-starved Bangladeshians.

Yeah, most news sources think it's because of the coins being smelted down, but I think that's quite unlikely. Only very large scale smelters would have the economies of scale to make this profitable. There must be some other explanation.

stainless steel has gone up in value quite a bit over the pass few years... making coings out of them is STUPID, if you ask me.

That's a much better article. It dispels the idea that razor factories are causing the shortage. But the mystery is still unsolved. How would it be possible for someone ("middlemen") to hoard so much money as to cause an artificial shortage?

Also, who are all the people waiting in queues to get coins from the bank? Who really needs coins in everyday life?

Perhaps this was the sequence of events:

1) Some people actually do turn coins into razors
2) This starts a rumor that coins are running out
3) Word gets out that in some cities you can sell 100 rupees in coins for 120 rupees in notes
4) A self fulfilling prophecy happens - coins really do run out as people begin hoarding them, expecting profits

This would explain why people wait in lines in front of banks to exchange 100 rupees for ... 100 rupees. It can't be that they all need change for using phone booths. Profit makes the world go round

I'm curious about other explanations so if someone runs into a good one please post it.

Wait, wait... this is the explanation, I simply overlooked it:

Inflation of nearly 5 per cent in India means that one rupee is worth more in its raw stainless steel form than its face value as a currency.

Obviously, if the metal in the coin is worth more than 1 rupee, the coins are bound to disappear. No hoarding or elaborate theories needed. Where it's going? Maybe to the same place that buys scrap metal.

If you had silver dollars in the US, of 1 dollar nominal value, they'd quickly disappear from circulation too.

BTW, I think that other countries also have small coins that are more valuable in metal than in nominal value. However they are usually pretty thin and are made from an alloy of a couple of metals, which combined makes them unprofitable to collect and smelt.
