Kurosawa is a bit heavy for a 15 year old, IMO. Its like having her read Shakespeare...

'Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo' Its an Anime retelling of Dumas' story, with a sci-fi twist. Anime ain't all cheap crap, you know...

      'Princess Mononoke'

      'Spirited away'

      'Ghost in the shell'

If she likes Harry Potter you could try to get her a Japanese translation of one of the Potter books.

We've already been over that and she's already had to for school anyway (or at least will next year).

Reading Shakespeare is quite normal for a 15 year-old.

Needlessly gory? You're such a *****... Know that Mamoru Oshii never puts needless gore in his movies. Its always the right amount of gore

                  What does "wtflame" mean, BTW?

Anyway, they're beautiful movies and the Major kicks ass. A great role-model, if you ask me

GitS makes sense, it's just lame. Not deep.

Lame? I don't think so. Not deep? Probably. But I wouldn't say its shallow either. Well, its a ****ing anime. What did you expect? Ingmar Bergmann? Despite that, you can't argue its artistic qualities.

If a movie is going to shoot monologues at me I want them to be interesting.

There are two movies, actually. The TV show is a great sci-fi thriller, IMO. The movies are also great, but they're more "artsy". They're gorgeous works, even though I have some professional reservations about the philosophical content.

Are they anything like the Solid State Society movie?

Care to expand on that? It was the professional part that raised my interest.
