I was going to say I wouldn't want to rely on weapons that could break-down or run out of ammo/fuel. But then even mêlée weapons can break.

These would be superior to a wood bat.

The others (axe, sledgehammer) seem more unwieldy than a wood bat whilst still having the weakness of a breakable wooden handle.

While you're hitting the zombie a bunch of times to make sure he stays down, the others are closing in.

You shouldn't use your bludgeoning weapon if a group of zombies are closing in. The bat is for taking down isolated zombies and conserving ammo; the shotgun is your crowd control weapon.

Second, the spray of small pellets loses power greatly at range, and the wide area of effect doesn't much matter since only a dead-on blast will do sufficient damage.

If a zombie is out of shotgun range, it's far enough away that you can run away from it. I don't see why you'd want to engage a zombie at long range. You should be avoiding them as much as possible.

The trouble with zombie-threads like this one is that everybody bases himself on the movies, while their depiction of zombies may not be accurate.

Zombies ARE NOT UNDEAD... Zombies are, depending on the situation, either animated dead bodies [not undead, as they have no sentience], or diseased beings who lost their sentience to the disease (28 days later, etc.) Holy water does nothing to them as they are not the spawn of the devil.

Anyway, I'll just listen to Max Brooks and go with the baseball bat/etc., shotgun, and a few grenades, iirc. And then running.
