I recommend reading Steven Levy's Crypto, if the career of Rivest and the meaning of PKI encryption is not properly understood. Warning: reading ahead!

Not really.
If I hire a mathematician and computer scientist should I expect vastly different skill sets? Do mathematicians in general know programing language? I don't know, I am asking. I suspect not.
A good mathematician would quickly pick up the skills needed to do CS, and a good computer scientist would quickly pick up the skills required of the mathematician.
In your experiance what percentage of them are good?

Originally posted by Kuciwalker Computer science, especially theoretical computer science, is merely a subset of mathematics. There's no "spillover." It just happens to be such a huge subfield within mathematics that it merits specialization.
Could the same be said about physics? Is physics a subset of mathematics, or is there something about physics that makes it a distinct field of study?

Physics isn't inherently mathematical; it's just that mathemics happen to be a convenient framework for modeling the behavior of physical systems.
Some areas of theoretical physics in fundamentally mathematical. I am thinking String Theory for example.
But we physicists cheat a lot, while a Comp Sci or a Mathematician wouldn't.

The poll didn't ask what feild we do respect most, not did. There were some great physicists in thier day, but now they are all off on theoretical things.
