  • When is the last time your X-ray was done by a physicist? The theory behind that tech is old. Like decades. Just a bunch of other engeneering types makeing the machines better.

Hint: What underpins all of the above?

Why would they personally administer them? Seriously, wow.

That's why the physicists are more important. It just takes one to come up with a revolutionary advance.

          • I think a lot of people here would be amazed how much physicists and mathematicians are behind everything in their everyday lives. All they see is the object that results from it, so they don't know any better...

            • People who bash pure research are idiots (yes, I'm talking to you, Patroklos). It may not result in short-tern benefits, but the discoveries make new technologies possible.

The poll didn't ask what feild we do respect most, not did. There were some great physicists in thier day, but now they are all off on theoretical things. Or just rehashing old things for useful purposes along with other types of engineers.

When was the last real named physicist important enough for the common person to care about? Same with the mathmatician (they have there heros, but not right now).

Maybe they are on the cusp of some great breakthrough, or maybe it will be 100 years before they come up with something new AND useful. but for right now it is a bunch of treading water.

Ah, just becasue I ranked it below Medicine in an internet poll I don't respect it.

Is it a crowd of doctors running around trying to convince everyone they are demigods or the math types here? Why would they feel the need to do that

Here are three mathematicians: Ronald L. Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard M. Adleman.

                    • I am googling them now, but the fact that I have to proves my point. What did they do and why is it important to me?

Hardly more important than my moms breast cancer doctor now are they?

                              • It also says Rivest is more a computer scientist than a mathmatician. His breakthrough was not discovering some new way to look at/do math, but rather apply math to computers.
