LOL, the neolib asking people to "buy American" instead of letting people act in accordance to the market.

Well, if you pay your workers lousy, then they of course buys what gives most value for the money.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Whether you are rich or poor, you buy what is most appealing to you. Which is why saying "buy American" goes against that little thing called *free* market. Oh the irony...

Actually, I can't see why the dollar loosing value is bad for the US. Here in Norway the economists and businessmen always complain when the value of the krone gets too high, as it worsens the competitiveness of the industry and corporations and such.

The USD is the lichpin currency of the global economy.

petrodollar is a relevant term - USD is the only currency which can be used to trade for oil.

This article explains it pretty well (just the first googled under "oil us dollar")

The Americans could live with Saddam until he started selling oil for euros instead of U.S. dollars. Then the Europeans could live with him.

Don't misunderstand. I couldn't give a toss about the conversion rate (the market will correct it, after all). I was merely informing Lancer the reason for the conversion rate.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Very pretty fall colors, a good purchase. I'm surprised the Japanese would sell it though.

That's not the reason. There's no historical link between the US deficit and exchange rate contrary to what most people think, and reality is often quite dissimilar to what you read in a text book. Fact of the matter is that the predominance of the dollar in trade means that it is quite insulated from the effects of a depreciation compared to most other countries. Thus, "Buy American" isn't really going to help since the deficit is not so dependent on the rate as you claim.

"The market will correct it..." as if rates were solely dictated by markets. Riiight....

I wish I could say yes but I'm not clever enough to come up with something that good intentionally .

(and that means from all world) some years ago:
