Those trends should mean a rather significant economic and political shift from Germany to France and the UK over the next half-century. Could be interesting ...

(Scandinavia? Even with 20% growth, there'll only be ~11 million Swedes in 2050, so we're still small fish. The other Scandinavians are even smaller.)

Creates a whole new sexual dimension in the limey-frog rivalry.

Still, the demographic balance is shifting towards the north-west, which is ironic considering.

Something else to consider (although I hate to get back to the muslim-theme), is that Turkeys fertility rate has been falling to just above the replacement rate. Their rate of 2.19 isn't that much of a difference from France's 1.94 or the US' 2.07 ('05 data). This could ease anxieties re a possible entry of Turkey in the EU. I see the mediterranean muslim countries ending up in a similar situation as the christian ones. Algeria's fertility rate is already a 'mere' 1.86 ('07 data).

The S family fertility rate is off the charts. Breeding like champs. Germany is a partial beneficiary of this.

As to a 61.6 year retirement date, that's rather generous compared to the US (~66 for those retiring right now). Upping it some in both instances won't hurt anybody.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I misquoted. The effective retirement age was 60.6 year in '05, compared to 56.8 in '01.

Still, considering were we came from and how drastic the improvement has been in a few years there's good reason for optimism. This improvement does not even reflect reforms to limit early retirements, which will be effective from '08 onwards.

If it weren't for Chavs, what would the UK's fertility rate be.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
